Meet our Northern District Executives

Angel Ortega, District Executive for Live Oak District.

The Los Padres Council is pleased to announce the hiring of Angel Ortega as District Executive in the Live Oak District. Angel graduated with Honors from California State University, Long Beach with a B.A. Degree in Communication Studies. While attending college, Angel worked part time as a Para-professional in Scouting with the Long Beach Area Council for five years.

Angel’s favorite scouting memory to date was watching a young man by the name of Daniel face his fears of climbing and rappelling, hiking in the dark and spending a night away from his family. By the end of the week campout Daniel become one of the fastest advancing scouts in Long Beach and should be receiving his Eagle late spring/early fall.

Angel is the District Executive for the Live Oak District. He maintains an office at the Santa Maria Scout Store. Help us welcome to the Los Padres Council Angel Ortega and his wife Marie and son Alex.

Jillian Shumate, District Executive for Del Norte and Camino Real Districts

Jillian came to Los Padres Council the beginning of last summer as the District Executive for the Camino Real and Del Norte Districts. She holds a BS degree in Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration from Cal Poly as well as an AS degree in Leisure Studies from Humboldt State. Prior to her current assignment, Jillian worked within the recreation industry for nearly 20 years. She indicates that Scouting was always part of her family life growing up, but she never had the opportunity to be involved, unless it was passing out cake at a Blue and Gold Dinner.

Jillian's hobbies include bike riding, rock climbing, camping, and hiking. She is accompanied on her life journey by a wonderful husband and two beautiful girls. Jillian volunteers her time second grade room parent, as chair on the Paso Robles Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, and co-leader for a girl scout troop. She actively participates in a neighborhood committee called Y.E.S. Youth Empowered Services. She is thrilled to be with the BSA and hope to keep our momentum going.

Friends of Scouting

It's the beginning of a new calendar year and once again we begin anew our annual Friends of Scouting campaign.

This year's theme is "Scouting Builds Future Leaders."

To schedule your FOS presentation at an upcoming Blue-Gold Dinner or Court of Honor, please call your District Executive.

How is your District doing? How much did your unit give to this year's campaign? When will the Appeal be made at my units. These questions and others will be answered by clicking on your District's FOS web page.

In addition to any money that you pay to your unit, it takes at least $150 annually to support your Scout and keep our facilities open. FOS makes this all possible. Your donation is tax deductible, and we will work with you if your employer has a matching contributing program.

Please be prepared to give to FOS, or go online at the Council's website and make your pledge commitment or payment.

Are You Tougher Than a Boy Scout? TV Show Promotion

Check out this weekly series began Monday, March 4th, at 8 pm on the National Geographic Channel. Six Monday night programs are planned.

Game Design Merit Badge Released

Scouting's 131st Merit Badge is Game Design. Although the merit badge pamphlet has not reached our stores yet, the requirements can be found on the website at

Here are the options and fun you can have:

  • Electronic (games for computers, game systems, or mobile devices)
  • Outdoor/Athletic (sports or games like capture the flag)
  • Tabletop (dice-based games, board games, card games
  • Pen and Paper or Role-Playing Games

Schedule the Date

Rancho Alegre Camp Work Day - Originally scheduled for March 9th, this event has been postponed until May 11th. At that time we will have Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity in camp assisting with the projects. APhiO is the National College Scouting Fraternity.

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) - March 23rd (8:00 am to 4:00 pm) at Larsen Meadow (Rancho Alegre). This is a required one day training Cub Scout and Webelos Leaders necessary to taking these younger Scouts on outdoor outings. Fee is $10.

Wilderness First Aid - April 12-13. This class has reached maximum capacity and reservations are no longer being accepted. Check with Rancho Alegre Program Office about being wait-listed.

Varsity Team Leader Specific Training - May 4 (8:30 am to Noon) at the Santa Maria LDS Stake Center (908 E. Sierra Madre). This course is a half-day course for Team Leaders and Assistants of a Varsity Team. No charge for this course.

Venturing Crew Adviser Specific Training - May 4 (9:00 am to 1:00 pm) at the Santa Maria LDS Stake Center (908 E. Sierra Madre). This course ia a half-day course for Venturing Crew Advisers and Assistants. There is a $10 fee for this course.

Woodbadge - September 26-28 and October 17-19. The first weekend is at Rancho Alegre; the second is at Camp Three Falls in this course hosted by Los Padres and Ventura County Councils. Woodbadge is the ultimate Scout training leadership program. Fee is $240 if paid in full at least 30 days prior to the start of the sessions.
