Zombie Survival Camp

Would your Cub Scouts be able to survive a zombie apocalypse? Come to ZOMBIE SURVIVAL CAMP at Rancho Alegre on Saturday November 2 to learn zombie apocalypse survival skills. Some of the survival skills the Cub Scouts will be learning are zombie first aid, zombie tracking, anti-zombie fortresses, fire building, cooking, and pioneering.

This is a Scouting event and before a Cub Scout can participate in all the fun activities he will have to be certified as a prepared for Zombie Apocalypse Scout.  Once they complete their training, they will receive their ZOMBIE SURVIVAL patch and can then participate in all the fun activities – like BB guns, archery, sling shots, face painting, and more!

All Cub Scouts are encouraged to bring their friends to ZOMBIE SURVIVAL CAMP. ZOMBIE SURVIVAL CAMP is meant to be a fun recruiting activity for Cub Scouts to invite their friends to. ZOMBIE SURVIVAL CAMP will showcase all the fun things Cub Scouts get to do – BB guns, archery, fire building, leatherwork, a closing campfire, and more!

Cub Scout Shooting Sports Day

As if Zombie Survival Camp isn't enough fun for Cub Scouts, our semi-annual Shooting Sports Day is another great activity. Scheduled for Saturday, October 19th. Cost is only $12 for a half day session that includes BB Guns, Archery, and Wrist Rockets.  Morning Session starts at 9:00 am and ends at Noon.  Afternoon Session begins at 1:00 pm and ends at 4:00 pm. Registration opens a half hour before the start of each session. Fee includes the Archery and BB Gun belt loops.  All registration and payments are done online, so please do NOT go to your Scout Store and expect to sign-up. All participants must have a form mandated by the State of California for the shooting of a bb gun. Please download, complete, and bring with you.

Cinematography merit badge becomes Moviemaking merit badge

MoviemakingThink of it as the Long-Awaited Sequel.

Cinematography merit badge is now Moviemaking merit badge, effective immediately. The design of the badge won’t change, and new pamphlets are expected in Scout shops in mid-November.

Why make this change? Well, anyone who sticks around to watch a movie’s credits knows that cinematography is just one specific part of making a movie. So calling a merit badge that covers all of moviemaking “Cinematography” was something of a misnomer.

The BSA’s merit badge team also saw this as a chance to make a few other changes, including:

  • Tweaked requirements in light of the title change and focus away from cinematography and more toward moviemaking in general (find the new requirements after the jump)
  • Updated text in a number of places to reflect the name change and address newer technology
  • New information about intellectual property

To obtain the new requirements from Bryan on Scouting, click here.

LDS Church Safety Resource Video

Although this video has been prepared as a resource for LDS units, non-Church units might find ideas within on planning for a safe outing.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released a new BSA-related video titled “Safety Through Planning and Listening to the Spirit.”

The video, created by the LDS Young Men General Presidency and Risk Management team, dramatizes the story of Steve Thelin, a rocket scientist and Scout leader who takes his Varsity Scout on a camping and hiking trip in the Grand Canyon but gets caught in a life-threatening thunderstorm. Their advanced planning, training, preparation, and willingness to listen to divine guidance led them safely out of the canyon.

“Many injuries and deaths could be prevented with proper planning,” said Steve Hoskins, manager of enterprise risk and affiliate services for Risk Management. “But this story goes beyond planning. They had a very good plan. But they listened when the Spirit told them it needed to change.”

The eight-minute video can be viewed and downloaded at http://safety.lds.org .
