Day 16 - Wednesday, July 24, 2013
Today was Day 16 of our Jamboree Adventure - Wednesday July 24, 2013!
Today we awoke at 4 am to finish packing our tents and gear for our 7am departure -- well, actually 3:45 am, to the sound of rain and thunder! But that did not deter us! We finished taking down tents and packing away cots, along with all our final gear, and were on the bus ready to go with two minutes to spare!
Then it was farewell to Subcamp A2, adios Summit! And off to Colonial Williamsburg. The 4-hour bus ride gave everyone to catch up on their sleep.
Following a quick lunch stop at Pierce's BBQ Pit (thanks for the recommendation Ernie!), we toured Colonial Williamsburg -- I have lots of photos and videos of the action!
Then it was on to dinner at Sal's Italian Restaurant, and then to Richmond VA for a final night at the Doubletree!
We have another 4am wake-up call tomorrow (Thurs July 25) to catch our flight home!
As a reminder, we're scheduled to land at LAX on United Flight #1235 at 12:21 pm PDT from Chicago O'Hare Airport.We'll then board the bus and return home, dropping off at the same places from which we departed (La Cumbre Plaza in Santa Barbara, ETA 3 to 4 pm; St. Louis de Montfort Church in Santa Maria, ETA 4:30 to 5:30 pm; and Troop 60 Scouthouse in Paso Robles, ETA 6 to 7 pm). Of course there are many variables tomorrow that may affect our arrive home time -- flights, traffic, punctuality at prior drop-offs, etc. We will do our best to keep you informed from the road at our updated ETAs.

Day 15 - Tuesday, July 23, 2013
Today was Day 15 of our Jamboree Adventure - Tuesday July 23, 2013!
Today was our Messengers of Peace Day of Service, where we went out into the local community of Oak Hill here in West Virginia and we refurbished the play ground area of Collins Middle School. It was hard but rewarding work, and the Scouts did a great job! My photos do not do justice to the before / after contrast of all the boys' efforts, but they recognized themselves what a great job they did, and you could tell everyone was proud of the results!
Tonight we finished up our last full day of camp, and started the packing process. We rise and depart the Jamboree very early tomorrow.

Day 14 - Monday, July 22, 2013
Hi All - check out these photos from day 14 of our Jamboree Adventure, Monday July 22, 2013!
Today we started out by cleaning out the latrines and shower houses, then we did Technology Quest in the morning -- all kinds of science exhibits and experiments! Then later in the day we saw more of the Jamboree -- Geocaching, the skate park ("The Park"), the pool, the military areas, "The Bows" archery range, and visit up to "Foxtrot" where our Los Padres Council Venturing Contingent is staying.
The other big headline for today was how nice the weather was - until 5pm, when it rained even heavier (in a short period of time) than anytime so far -- twice! (Although we hear it rained back home today too -- what a way to welcome the Royal Baby into the world!)

Hi All - today was another great day, even if a bit soggy! The day started with breakfast then church services. Then got to see more of the Jamboree, including the Jambo-palooza; visit with some friends who are here at Jamboree; then finished the day with cake and a fireworks show!

Hi All -- Attached are photos from Day 6 of Jamboree Trip - Sunday July 14, 2013. Today we visited Arlington Nat'l Cemetery; FDR, MLK & Jefferson Memorials, and Monticello. We are now in Charlottesville, and tomorrow we'll visit University of Virginia, then it's onto the Jamboree at the Summit!

Hi All -- Jamboree Touring Day 5, Saturday July 13, 2013 -- today's highlights were a tour of Mount Vernon, the home of George and Martha Washington; a visit to the Boy Scouting Memorial in Washington D.C.; and the Smithsonian Museum of American History, Museum of Natural History, and Air and Space Museum.
Other highlights of the day included great breakfast at hotel, and connecting with the Los Padres Council Jamboree Venture Crew Contingent!

Day 4 - July 12, 2013
Hi All -- Today was another big day in Washington D.C. that included, among other things, the US Capitol, Ford's Theater, the National Cathedral, the National Archives, and the White House!
The day started with rain but turned to just mostly cloudy throughout the day. We had breakfast, turned in our laundry, and headed to the Capitol, where we saw a movie and took a tour, and also had photo stops of the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court.
Then it was on to Ford's theater, where we toured the museum and listened to a great explanation of the events leading up to and following President Lincoln's death. Then after a quick lunch we took a ride down Embassy Row and toured the National Cathedral, where we say beautiful stained class and masterful craftsmanship, as well as the grotesque (not gargoyle) of Darth Vader!
Then we went to we went to the National Archives and saw the Original documents, such as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Magna Carta!
We then went to dinner at Au Bon Pain, then went to the White House for more picture stops.
Tomorrow, Saturday July 13 we'll be visiting Mount Vernon, the Holocaust Museum, the Smithsonians, and then an evening walk to see more of the monuments we didn't see Tuesday.

Day 3 - July 11, 2013
Photos from our third day of our Jamboree Tour -- Thursday July 11, 2013. Gettysburg Museum, Theater, Cyclorama, Visitor's Center and Battlefield Tour. And with the guidance of our Gettysburg Battlefield Tour Guide Paul, the Scouts practice loading a cannon as it was done in the Civil War -- sort of. (See YouTube: http://youtu.be/UlWlJxMew4w
Then we went into Washington D.C. for tours of the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial, the Air Force memorial, the Marine Corps (Iwo Jima) Memorial, the World War II Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Korean War Memorial. We also saw the Washington Monument, which is currently shrouded in scaffolding, still trying to repair damage from the earthquake.
Tonight we are at the Washington D.C. Marriott, where it is raining, lightning and thunderstorms!
Tomorrow more of Washington D.C., including the Capitol, Ford's Theater, the National Cathedral, and more!

Day 2 - July 10, 2013
After a good night sleep and a great breakfast, we met our tour guide Murray and started our walking tour of Philadelphia at the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall(which we learned are actually called the Pennsylvania State House Bell and the Pennsylvania State House!). During our tour we saw lots of other Boy Scouts too! Next we went to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from the Revolutionary War, the Franklin Print Shop, Christ Church, Elfreth's Alley, and Betsy Ross House. What a morning! Then after lunch at the Grand Old Cheesesteak, we walked to Franklin's Gravesite, the Quaker Meeting House, and then the National Convention Center.
After that we were back onto the bus, and on our way out of town we stopped by the Philadelphia Museum of Art for a quick run up the "Rocky" steps - made famous from that scene in "Rocky." (I have posted a quick video of it at YouTube at : http://youtu.be/8kWSnbx051c
From there we went to Valley Forge and spent the rest of the afternoon there. Quick dinner just outside of Valley Forge, then we drove to Gettysburg where we are sleeping tonight. Tomorrow (Thursday July 11) we will spend the morning touring Gettysburg and then the afternoon we'll be on to Washington DC, the Pentagon, and a twilight tour of the Memorials. Will be another big day.
The weather has been good -- warm (upper 80's) and around 50% humidity - we can feel the difference from home, but there has usually been a breeze and / or some cloud cover, so it has been nice (although better for those of us from Paso than those from the Coast!). Everything has been great so far -- the food, the bus and our driver Ernie, the hotels, our first tour guide Murray (with several more tour guides to come), and all the people. Everyone seems genuinely pleased to see the Scouts - no negativity toward the Scouts whatsoever. And the Scouts themselves have been fantastic! They're still getting the hang of moving around in a large group of 40, but overall well-mannered, punctual, enthusiastic and attentive -- you all have a lot to be proud of for these fine young ambassadors of Scouting representing the Central Coast!

What is a National Scout Jamboree?
It is a gathering of Scouts from all over the United States and from over 60 foreign countries that occurs only once every four years. The next Jamboree will be held July 15-24, 2013. It is the ultimate adventure for Scouts - you'll see and do more in 10 days than you might in the rest of your Scouting experience. On top of that, you will also experience a once-in-a-lifetime tour of many of the historic sites that are important in our American History, as well as many other interesting and significant places on the East Coast.
Where is the Jamboree going to be held?
The National Jamboree will be held at the newest high adventure base for the Boy Scouts, the Bechtel Family Summit National Adventure Base, located in West Virginia.
What is the date?
The Jamboree is scheduled for July 15-24, 2013. Our Council contigent will leave approximately a week earlier and tour some of the sites in our National Capitol and the Eastern United States.
What are the qualifications to attend?
Scouts will need to be a minimum of 12 years old, and First Class Rank, and not older than 18 by June 15, 2013, to be eligible to attend. However, we have found that Scouts who are 14 and older usually get the most out of the experience. With the pre-Jamboree tour and Jamboree itself, Scouts will be gone for approximately 17 days.

Mr. von Dohlen was one of the Assistant Scoutmasters for the Council's Contingent Troop for the 2010 National Jamboree, and has attended several National and World Jamborees as a youth.

Six Must-See Places at the Summit
The Summit Bechtel Reserve is going to offer a mountaintop full of adventure when it opens for the 2013 National Jamboree. And with excitement quickly building, there are six places Scouts and Venturers need to know about—
the high-adventure base camps.
- Skateboarding and BMX
- Shooting sports
- Aquatics
- Mountain biking
- Zip lining, canopy tours, and challenge courses
- Rock climbing and rappelling
Those are the six adventure hot spots that will be featured at the Summit. Designed by the best in the industry, each basecamp is set to provide a one-of-a-kind experience. Since the BSA actually owns the Summit, developers are creating each to embrace traditional and new Scouting activities.
Want to know the best part? With the changes made to the jamboree schedule, Scouts and Venturers will get to choose which basecamps they want to try in late 2012 or early 2013, before the jamboree even begins. This means the sooner Scouts register, the better!
